[The Yachting Classic]

The only authorized reproduction of L. Frances Herreshoff's Saluting Cannon is 16" long, made of polished bronze and rides on a solid teak carriage. The Herreshoff breach-loads and fires 10-gauge blanks with a hardwood mallet, which comes standard.

Manual firing of the cannon is accomplished by striking the cascabel knob smartly with the wood mallet (striker configuration also available). The empty shell is extracted by running the mallet handle down the bore.

Mounting & finishing options: In addition to the teak carriage mount option, the Herreshoff can also be crafted with bronze yoke for winch or rail mounting, on a bronze pedestal with yoke, on hardwood trophy base, or can be mounted and rigged with a hardwood striker base. Protect and display your Herreshoff with a handsome custom-made cherrywood box.

See below for detailed firing instructions.

Loading, Firing & Safety Precautions

Picture
  • The Herreshoff is loaded by sliding the breech (pictured left) upward and removing completely.
  • Load 10-gauge blank with the primer facing out, then replace the breech.
  • Prior to firing, check the surrounding areas for clearance, making sure that there is at least 6 feet in front of the cannon to prevent fire or smoke damage. Never stand in front of the cannon while it is being fired.
  • Fire the cannon by smartly striking the cascabel knob from straight on.
  • Always wear hearing protection when in the vicinity of a cannon being fired.
  • Never load projectiles into your cannon, as this can cause permanent damage.
  • Remove the empty shell by running the mallet handle down the bore.
